The premiere took place in St. Petersburg on 27 November (Old Style) 1842 at the Bolshoy Theater. Four years later, the opera was given its Moscow premiere at the Bolshoy Theatre in 1846. The opera was first performed in the United States at Sarah Caldwell's Opera Company of Boston in 1977.
