In the same year Hargrave was nominated for the National AFL Rising Star award. Hargrave also won the Western Bulldogs club Best First Year Player in 2002.
In 2003, Hargrave was fined $67,500 by the tribunal after he punched Heath Black during a melee against the St Kilda Saints. His defence to the incident was "I thought he was going to hit me so I just thought, 'Get in first'".
