The Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of three counties in north central Utah, anchored by Salt Lake City. As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 968,858. As of July 1, 2008 the U.S. Census Bureau's population estimates division placed the population at 1,115,692, an increase of 146,834 or 15.2 percent since April 2000. The Utah Population Estimates Committee estimates the Salt Lake Metropolitan Statistical Area to have a July 1, 2008 population of 1,128,684, an increase of 159,826 or 16.5 percent since April 2000. The Salt Lake City Metropolitan Area and the Ogden-Clearfield Metropolitan Area were a single metropolitan area known as the Salt Lake City-Ogden Metropolitan Area until being separated in 2005.
