Winward was engaged to footballer David Dunn. Their daughter Mia was born at home in Edgworth, Lancashire on 12 June 2005. Sammy and David later split in September of that year, but remain friends. Sammy now lives with Mia, on the same road as her parents Jayne and Martin Winward who are helping her with Mia.
She appeared in the ITV celebrity talent show Soapstar Superstar in January 2006.
In March 2006, she appeared on the Orange Playlist. Here she explained that she was training to be a ballerina before being picked by her agent Ruth Young to attend the Emmerdale audition.
