The school gained some notoriety when in 1979, four sisters, including future Olympic Gold Medalists junior Sherri Howard and freshman Denean Howard), plus sisters senior Artra and sophomore Tina set the NFHS (National High School) record in the 4 x 400 metres relay. The record read: (Howard, Howard, Howard, Howard) 3:44.1 Artra graduated and the other sisters then moved to John F. Kennedy High School (Los Angeles)
