Information on the character first surfaced when Hollyoaks announced the plans to introduce a new family unit into the series. Consisting of farther Mike, mother Kathy and sister Amy, Sarah was the eldest daughter. Sarah first appeared on-screen in October 2005 along with her family. When Sarah was a baby, Mike and Kathy wanted to put Sarah up for adoption but then changed their minds.
Auditions were held for the part of Sarah, the eldest daughter of the Barnes' family with actress Loui Batley going onto secure the role.
