According to Varma, the film is a Mumbai underworld interpretation of Mario Puzo's 1969 novel The Godfather. set in a political scenario. There have also been speculations in the media that the film is loosely based on the family of Balasaheb Thackeray, the leader of the Mumbai-based political party, Shiv Sena.
The film's sequel, Sarkar Raj, was released on 6 June 2008.
