The Scabland Band was formed in 1994 by husbands of the bellydance troupe, Sabah Dance Ensemble. The original four members were Tom Crowell, Rick Edwards, Roy Petit and Todd Petit. The band has performed around the USA Northwest since 1995 and has included in its members, Roy's son, Barry Petit and Mark Rook. In 2008 members include Roy and Todd Petit, Rick Edwards, Steve and Kristi Nay, Pat Brooke and various students and dancers. Sabah Dance Ensemble consists of Debi Johanson, Sharon Petit, Sylvia Bise and Wendy Edwards. The sponsoring organization is Sabah Performing Arts. In 1998, the band signed onto the huge indie music site, Mp3.com and quickly became popular in the Middle Eastern genre for their brand of West Coast Tribal bellydance music. After the demise of Mp3.com, the band continued performing at festivals, street fairs, farmer's markets and other events from spring through fall.
The first Scabland Band CDs were released through Mp3.com and sold world wide as well as nationally. These CDs are 'Sabah!' and 'Scabland Raks'. CDs released since include 'Scabby Road' and now the band is releasing 'Drums from the Scablands' a two CD set containing practice rhythms for dance and drum instructors on one CD and music for choreography and dance on the other.
Our name is derived from our geographic location right on the edge of the Channeled Scablands of Eastern Washington State. The Scablands were created by gigantic walls of water which swept over the land, tearing channels into the basaltic rock and leaving potholes, dry falls, gorges, coulees and many other evidences of the devastation. My home was built on the west side of a single ripple mark.
