Second Generation Search Engine Optimization or SEO2g, refers to a specialization within the field of SEO. SEO2g seeks to develop SEO techniques and methodologies that are based upon reliable data born of sound research practices. There are several key goals that differentiate the art from common SEO (SEO1g):
- A sound understanding and technical grasp of web search technology and web information retrieval.
- A body of reliable search engine data that is accumulated via specialized research projects designed to reverse-engineer the mechanics of modern search engines.
- Thorough testing of all proposed techniques (often within carefully monitored segments of the target search index).
- The development of SEO techniques that can be applied with reliability and precision.*
- The Development of novel metrics and research methodologies to support the continued evolution of the art.
The number of practicing second generation SEO's is very few as the SEO industry is still immersed in first generation approaches which are largely intuitive and often wildly speculative. For example the boilerplate SEO checklists (Keywords in Title, Meta, Headings, etc.).
In fact one important feature of SEO2g is that in practice it requires that each and every
campaign be treated as a unique entity with unique rules for
optimization. This approach takes into account the dynamic nature of
search engine indexing, query interpretation and sorting.*
Another unique aspect of SEO2g is that there is generally no collaborative pooling of knowledge between its practitioners. One can find superficial discussions about the art, web IR, etc. and even hypthetical intellectual exercises between second generation SEO's, but that's is about it. The knowledge that can be acquired via sound SEO2g research techniques can represent true trade secrets which are usually carefully guarded by their owner and translated into proprietary optimization technologies.
