September Tapes is the debut feature of film director Christian Johnston, who wrote the script with Christian Van Gregg. The plot uses supposedly "found" documentary footage left by the film makers, who, led by a character named Don Larson, have disappeared while making a film about their search for Osama bin Laden in the wake of the September 11 attacks. Eight tapes are found which show the group drawing closer and closer to Taliban fighters.
The film was first presented at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2004, where First Look Media acquired worldwide distribution rights. In May of the same year, it was featured at the Cannes Film Festival.
