Serbs (Serbian Cyrillic: Срби Serbian Latin: Srbi) are a South Slavic people living in the Central Europe and the Balkans (Southeastern Europe), between the Balkan and Carpathian mountains in the east and the Adriatic sea in the west. They are located mainly in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and, to a lesser extent, in Croatia. Serbs are also a significant minority in two other republics of the Former Yugoslavia, the Republic of Macedonia and Slovenia. Serbs are an officially recognized minority in both Romania and Hungary. There is a sizeable Serbian diaspora in Western Europe (concentrated in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, so called Gastarbeiters), as well in North America: the United States and Canada. In the German-speaking countries alone live more than a million people of Serbian origin: Luxembourg (1% share in the overall population), Austria (1,8%), Switzerland (1%), and Germany (almost 1%).
