Sergio Rendine

Sergio Rendine, born in Naples on September 7, 1954, graduated in composition with Domenico Guàccero at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome and in choral music and conducting with Giuseppe Agostini at the Conservatory Rossini in Pesaro. He is considered among the most important composers of our time, with commissions from leading musical institutions including the S.D.R. Radio Symphony Orchestra of Stuttgart, the N.D.R. Radio Symphony Orchestra of Hamburg, W.D.R. Radio of Cologne, the Salzburg Festival, the BBC in London, the Opera of Frankfurt, l’Orchestre Philarmonique de Monaco, the Opera of Montecarlo, the Oslo Philarmonic, the Philarmonic Orchestra of La Scala, the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, the Strasbourg Festival and the Festival of Two Worlds at Spoleto, the Accademia Nazionale di S.Cecilia, la Citè International des Artes of Paris, the Arena di Verona Foundation, the VII World Congress of Saxofone, Washington, the Lisbon Gulbenkian Foundation, the Saint Petersburg State Symphomny Orchestra, the Bolshoy in Moscow, the Prague National Symphony Orchestra, the 2000 Grand Jubilee Committee, the  O.N.C.A., National Classic Orchestra of Andorra, and the National Auditorium of Madrid.
His opera “Alice” commissioned by RAI won the Barcelona “Hondas” Prize and the special critics prize of “Prix Italia." In 1995 he was selected by the Nobel Prize Committee to compose, together with Matsudaira, Menotti, Penderecki and Schnittke, the “World Mass for Peace” which was  performed in Oslo at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. His “Missa de beatificatione in onore di Padre Pio da Pietralcina” performed in the Sala Nervi at the Vatican was commissioned as the official Mass for the beatification. His “Passio et Resurrectio” for soloists, choir and orchestra was written for Good Friday in the Jubilee Year of 2000. Furthemore, he wrote over two hundred works, including “Romanza – una favola romana“, opera in three acts, and “De Profundis, Secretum Teophili”. For 2009 the Andorran Government and the Liceu Theatre of Barcelona have commissioned him to compose the three acts opera “Le somni de Carle Many”, the first lyric opera in the Catalan language, and in 2010 he will compose a Double Concerto for violin, cello and orchestra for E. Dindo and the San Remo Symphony Orchestra.
Sergio Rendine served as administrative adviser to the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, opera section commissioner of the SIAE (the Italian Authors and Publishers Association), and artistic director of the Teatro Marrucino of Chieti, the Lyric Theatre of Abruzzi. Most of his compositions are published by Casa Ricordi Milan.
Among the principal performers of his works have been Salvatore Accardo, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Michele Campanella, Josè Carreras, Carla Fracci, Cecilia Gasdia, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Enzo Gragnaniello, Micha van Hoeck, Will Humburg, Lindsay Kemp, Steven Mercurio, Milva, Amii Stewart, and many others.
