"When the 28-story Shell Building was developed in 1930, it was one of the tallest office structures in San Francisco. Today, it remains one of the city’s most distinctive business addresses. Winner of the 1994 San Francisco Architectural Heritage Award for excellence in architectural preservation, the building was strongly influenced by the works of art deco founding father George Kelham who employed many of the styles salient characteristics: a beautifully proportioned base, shaft, and crown; a conscious attempt to compliment the surrounding urban landscape. Kelham, the chief architect for the 1915’s World’s Fair, ornamented this stunning skyscraper with an apropos shell motif and clad the result glazed terra cotta. Custom, hand detailed finishes throughout the grand three story main entry and the lobby set the tome for the rest of the building. This includes muti-tenant floors appointed with marble surrounds and bases. Bronze and glass wall sconces blend strikingly with the bronze-tone elevator doors. A recent comprehensive, meticulous restoration has preserved the building’s historic grandeur and art deco detailing, and at the same time, upgraded its operational systems and equipment with state-of-the-art technology. The Shell Building with its time-honored architecture, contemporary offices and classic amenities-has captured the best of both worlds. It is a San Francisco landmark."
