In their first film appearance, the Shobijin lived on Infant island where they acted as priestesses to Mothra's tribal cult of primitive islanders. The island is used a nuclear testing site, causing mutations in the native flora, and when a group of researchers arrive on the island, the shobijin beg them to halt the tests. The discovery of the shobijin leads a greedy corporation from the fictional nation of Rolisica to abduct them, killing several tribesmen in the process. The twins are forced to become sideshow attractions in Tokyo and begin to sing telepathically to Mothra, seeking her aide. Mothra hatches from her egg and attacks Tokyo, destroying everything in her path before spinning a cocoon on the ruins of the Tokyo tower.
