The airport's runways and terminal are visible to traffic along Interstate 20, a main east-west corridor of the Southern United States. Shreveport Regional was designed to replace the Shreveport Downtown airport, which limited growth due to close proximity of the Red River.
As per Federal Aviation Administration records, the airport had 319,960 passenger boardings (enplanements) in calendar year 2005 and 306,832 enplanements in 2006. According to the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2007-2011, it is a primary commercial service airport.
