The economic and diplomatic importance of People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of India, which are the two most populous states in the world, as emerging economies, has in recent years increased the significance of their bilateral relationship. Historical relations between Beijing and New Delhi can most accurately be described as being controversial at best. Their relationship has undergone times of both war and peace. It has been characterized by both border disputes, resulting in military conflict, and by economic cooperation. Both countries, despite their belligerent mutual histories, have in recent years successfully attempted to reignite diplomatic and economic ties, and consequently, the two countries' relations have become closer, albeit gradually.
