Somber Eyes to the Sky was Shadows Fall's debut album released in November 30, 1997. Unlike other albums the band released, this one actually has the sound that combines brutality and aggression of Death Metal. This album was believed the Death Metal influences came from Matt Bachand and Phil Labonte due to their Death Metal in Perpetual Doom. However Matt was only in Perpetual Doom as a part time guitarist, but was a guitarist for another local Death Metal band Exhumed (not the Deathgrind band).
Matt Bachand and Jon Donais creates a various brutal and aggressive Death Metal type of riffs, such as complex palm-muting patterns, extremely fast tremolo picking, and the intense breakdowns. Also they combine with some progressive melody with a certain harmonic ideas, and sometimes acoustic/clean are conveyed. The drumming that David Germain creates involves more blast beats, double bass pedaling, and galloping. The vocals are also Death Metal based, Matt and Phil both have an range from really low, deep, and guttural Death growls to an mid-range, monotonal Death growls. Jon uses a high-pitched, raspy screaming/shrieking vocals, and sometimes Phil does it to. And clean vocals are added by Matt and Phil during a certain section of song.
