The term sopranino clarinet refers to members of the clarinet family, smaller and higher pitched than the more familiar soprano clarinet. Most commonly it is used as a synonym for piccolo clarinet. Shackleton uses it to refer to the E¬ルᆳ and D clarinets, as well as obsolete instruments in G, F, and E, but this classification, while useful, seems to be uncommon; the E¬ルᆳ and D instruments are more usually considered soprano clarinets.
