Squirm also features early makeup work from Oscar-winning makeup artist Rick Baker. The film was shot over the course of 24 days in Port Wentworth, Georgia. The story takes place in the small town of Fly Creek, Georgia, which is hit by a terrible storm one night that knocks down power lines. Electricity is pumped into the ground, inadvertently prompting the bloodworms in the town begin viciously attacking unsuspecting citizens.
In 1999, the movie was featured in Mystery Science Theater 3000's penultimate episode.
