Many of the Vellalar Jaffna Tamils availed themselves of the educational opportunities provided by the colonial authorities & missionaries and together with their hard work earned many government posts offered to locals by the British. This was perceived by the majority Sinhalese that the British preferred the minority Tamils and that the Tamils were better off and the Sinhalese were being deprived, leading to a feeling of disenchantment and resentment....
