Following the events of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the crew of the USS Enterprise-A is enjoying shore leave. The new starship's shakedown cruise goes poorly and it is in spacedock for repairs. At Yosemite, Captain James T. Kirk is on a camping trip with the half-Vulcan Spock and Dr. Leonard McCoy. Their leave is interrupted when the Enterprise is ordered to rescue human, Klingon, and Romulan hostages on the desolate planet of Nimbus III. Learning of the Enterprise's mission, the Klingon commander Klaa decides to engage Kirk in combat for his own personal glory.
