Abbott is famous for his portrayal of oddball characters, particularly one known as The Sandman. He is also an actor in both serious and comedic roles, and was married to Australian actress Angela Moore with whom he has one child. He was a member of a cabaret band called The Castanet Club in which he played a character called Johnny Goodman. A film was made about the band in (1990).
As Johnny Goodman, Abbott released an eponymously entitled album of 14 original songs in 1988 on the Australian boutique label, Regular Records. Two weeks after its release it was pulled from sale because of potentially defamatory lyrics which clearly identified a residential address and alleged illegal activities.
