Knapp is a 1973 graduate of Yale University. He did his graduate work at Cornell University, earning his Master's degree in 1977 and his doctorate in 1981. He served for 16 years on the faculty of University of California, Berkeley as a specialist in 18th and 19th century English literature and in literary theory, before coming to Johns Hopkins in 1994.
