The school was founded in 1909 and established as a comprehensive in 1971. In 1955 the school was moved from Violet Hill Road to the Onehouse Road site it occupies today.
The school was awarded Technology College status in March 2001, which was renewed in 2006 when the school also became a Leading School for Humanities. This has seen the creation of new computer suites in the school as well as improved provision for technology students.
The school also has a Sixth Form centre run by the head of sixth form Mr A. Soanes. It is now based in its own dedicated building. This features a Business Studies computer room as well as a common room and gallery seating area.
