In Georgian, the city is known as სოხუმი (Sokhumi) and in Russian as Сухум (Sukhum) or Сухуми (Sukhumi). The etymology of these forms is disputed. The city was earlier known in Turkish as Sukum-Kale, which can be read to mean 'water-sand fortress'.
