The Sushruta Samhita (सुश्रुतसंहिता) is a Sanskrit text, attributed to one Sushruta, foundational to Ayurvedic medicine (Indian traditional medicine), with innovative chapters on surgery. The Sushruta Samhita contains 184 chapters and description of 1120 illnesses, 700 medicinal plants, a detailed study on Anatomy, 64 preparations from mineral sources and 57 preparations based on animal sources. The text as preserved dates to the 3rd or 4th century AD. The earliest surviving copy is known as the Bower Manuscript. The text was translated into Arabic in the 8th century.
The Sushruta samhita is in two parts, first one is Purva-tantra in five sections and the second one is Uttara-tantra.
