She is a Roman Catholic, and attended the all-girl St. Mary's Academy high school. She says that at this school, she was taught that sex was detrimental and that it was "not for good girls to enjoy".
In 1983, she was voted Homecoming Queen of Virginia Military Institute, where her then-boyfriend was enrolled.
In 1984, she won the title Miss District of Columbia Teen USA.
