Founded in 1908 by engineer and politician, The Hon. George Swinburne, as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College, it changed its name to Swinburne Technical College in 1913, to honour its founder. In 1992, the College was granted official public university status and became known as Swinburne University of Technology.
The 2009 Good Universities Guide of Australia ranked Swinburne the best in Melbourne for teaching quality, equal best for graduate satisfaction, along with a five-star rating for cultural diversity. Swinburne is also ranked in the 401-500 range from THE - QS World University Rankings in 2008 and 2009 Swinburne's ranking in THE - QS World University Rankings .
