David Teague attended Pike High School, located in Indianapolis, where he played along with former Notre Dame basketball star player, Chris Thomas. David led the Red Devils in scoring, averaging 15.3 points per game. His cousin, Jeff Teague, who also played for Pike, played at Wake Forest and currently plays for the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA.
After graduating high school, he attended Bridgeton Academy Prep in Maine for a short time before transferring to Purdue University, although he was considering Southern Illinois (who at the time was head coached by his soon to be Purdue head coach, Matt Painter, before Gene Keady recruited him).
