Gross grew up in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, New York. She earned a Bachelor's degree in English and a Master's in communications from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She began a teaching career, but said that she was "totally unequipped" for the job, and was fired after only six weeks. She began her radio career in 1973 at WBFO, a public radio station in Buffalo, New York, where she had been volunteering.
