Detectives Goren and Eames investigate the murder of a man found beaten to death. They discover that the victim, Denis Dupont, was an international swindler who cheated a group of wealthy investors and romanced their foolish wives, but further evidence reveals that the investors discovered he was a con man. Goren theorizes that the group hired a hitman to teach the man a severe lesson. He deduces that Dupont knew someone was setting him up, and sent someone else up to the room, where he took the punishment intended for Dupont. But the thug did not kill him, and Dupont then came along to finish the job, disfiguring the body to fake his own death. Goren tries to lure the killer into revealing himself by appealing to his ego as the bait.
