The Merry Gentleman is the story of Kate, a young woman who flees her abusive policeman husband, moving to Chicago. In her new life, she befriends a co-worker but otherwise generally keeps to herself, due to her embarrassment over a black eye left over from her husband's latest attack.
One evening, she spots Frank Logan on the ledge of a building. He is a professional hitman, on the roof to get a shot at his latest mark, but Kate mistakes him for a jumper (it is unclear whether he actually was suicidal at the time), and her cry not to jump startles him into safely falling backward onto the roof.
