The film centers on the family of a scientist (Dean Jones) who struggles to pays the bills. His wife (Sandy Duncan) gets a recipe for applesauce wrong and gives it to her husband to take to work for lunch. In a humorous chain reaction, the animals the scientist is testing steal the applesauce and help themselves to it, including a duck who wanders into a radiation lab and becomes irradiated. The scientist is ordered to get rid of the duck, so he figures he can give it to his son who has been wanting a pet, only to discover it now lays golden eggs.
