The footage is presented in the style of a rock/mock documentary—a parody shot in documentary format—in which cameras follow the band members through their stage performances and private lives. Draper based the movie on Nat's band, The Silver Boulders that he established in preschool with his friends. Principal photography took place in mid-2004 in New York City and interior scenes were filmed in the Draper-Wolff family apartment.
