The network was created in 1996 when the commercial radio activities of Radio New Zealand were divested by the New Zealand government. That same year The Radio Network purchased the assets of Prospect Media Limited, Prospect Media included 11 radios these stations include Radio Hauraki in Auckland, Easy Listening i in Auckland and Hamilton and several other stations. Most of these stations were later closed down or replaced with The Radio Network brands.
