The Seven Sacraments (The Dal Pozzo Sacraments) is one of two series of paintings illustrating the sacraments by French painter Nicolas Poussin. The first series is also known as the Dal Pozzo Sacraments because it was commissioned by Poussin's Roman patron, Cassiano dal Pozzo. The Dal Pozzo Sacraments were eventually acquired by the Duke of Rutland in 1784 and were installed in the Duke's residence, the Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire. In 1816, a fire at the Belvoir Castle destroyed the Penance painting. In 1939, The Seven Sacraments: Baptism was sold to a private collector and was eventually donated to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC in 1946. The five Dal Pozzo Sacraments paintings remaining in the Collection of the Duke of Rutland are currently on a long-term loan to the National Gallery, London, and are in the market for a total of 100 million US dollars.
