Six hundred miles from the coast of Africa, in September 1942, a German U-boat, U-156, sinks the British troopship Laconia which is en route from Cape Town to United Kingdom. Laconia carries 1,800 Italian POWs, some 80 British women and children, 103 Free Poles and 268 British soldiers guarding the prisoners, and a 136-man crew; in total some 2,700 people.
