Emily is upset when Richard's mother Trix announces that she's coming to visit. Trix is extremely critical of Emily, but she seems to like Rory and Lorelai. When she hears that Richard and Emily are loaning Lorelai money for Rory's education, she suggests that she gives Rory her trust fund now so that Rory can pay for Chilton.
Emily is upset with Trix's offer because she is afraid of losing Lorelai and Rory. She tries to get Lorelai to refuse Trix's offer, planting doubts in Lorelai's mind about what the money would do to her relationship with Rory. She and Emily wind up arguing about the money during tea with Trix. Their loud argument disgusts Trix, who withdraws her offer, saying Emily and Lorelai are too immature.
