The New York Mets of Major League Baseball signed Pérez as a free agent in 2000. A September 1 callup, he hit a combined 12-for-40 in the 2000 National League Division Series and 2000 National League Championship Series. In Game 1 of the 2000 World Series against the New York Yankees, Pérez was involved in an infamous play. With Pérez on base, Todd Zeile hit a long fly ball that Pérez thought to be a home run, causing him to slow down on the basepaths. However, the ball hit off the outfield wall and stayed in the park. Pérez's error in judgment caused him to be thrown out at home plate trying to score on the play.
After another brief period with the Triple-A Norfolk Tides in 2001, he became a Mets regular.
Pérez was traded to the Chicago White Sox of the American League in 2004....
