Cavanagh was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and moved with his parents to a small city, Winneba, in Ghana when he was seven years old. Cavanagh was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and moved with his parents to a small city, Winneba, in Ghana when he was seven years old. In his teens, the family moved to Lennoxville, Quebec where he started high school. Tom went to high school at the Seminaire de Sherbrooke, in nearby Sherbrooke, where he studied in french and played basketball for the Barons. He later studied at Champlain College in Lennoxville at the CEGEP level. Thomas is fluently bilingual in French and English. While attending Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, he became interested in theatre and music and played ice hockey and varsity basketball. He graduated with degrees in English, biology and education.
