Some fans have speculated that Hagen is based on a composite of two real-life mobsters Frank DeSimone and Murray Humphreys. Both men were powerful Mafia figures; however, DeSimone was heavily involved in illicit and violent activities of the gang, and Hagen mostly kept his hands clean, like the real-life Humphreys. While DeSimone was born into the Mafia family, Humphreys was "adopted" into it by Al Capone for his natural smooth-talking, manipulative abilities. Also, it is notable that Humphreys was of Welsh descent, not Italian. Like Hagen, DeSimone was also a lawyer.
