Laughlin was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He went to college at the University of Indiana and the University of Wisconsin, playing football for both schools, Laughlin decided to become an actor after seeing a production of A Streetcar Named Desire. He wrote the original screenplay for the film Billy Jack in 1954 after witnessing the treatment of Native Americans in his fiancee's hometown of Winner, South Dakota.
