Native American actor Kunu Hank whose birth name was Henry O' Brien took the role of Injun Joe. The movie was produced by Reader's Digest. Along with the Twain story, the film was also a musical, with screenplay and songs by the "Sherman Brothers," aka Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman. Charlie Pride performed the opening tune "River Song". The film garnered some scandal as both boy actors appeared nude in the "Freebootin'" segment. This was shot in Arrow Rock, Missouri and Meramec Caverns in Stanton, Missouri. Another similar film was released on television that same year which was shot in Upper Canada Village.
