Flanagan was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the middle of five children. When Flanagan was six years old, his father abandoned the family. He grew up in the rough Milton area in the North of Glasgow and has admitted to getting into some trouble, but says also that his mother Betty always kept him in line. In his early years, Flanagan worked as a painter, decorator, and disc jockey. He received his distinctive scars, similar in shape to a Glasgow smile, on his face after a mugging that almost left him dead. Once recovered, Flanagan saw no way of returning to his old life and, at the urging of his wife and friends, principally Robert Carlyle, he took up acting.
