Trujillo grew up on a farm with 100 acres (0.40 km) of land and started skating at the age of 7. A neighbor had ramps in his barn and often invited Tony to skate there. Trujillo started competing in skate contests when he was 12 in the California Amateur Skateboard League, winning one at the age of 12 and placing in numerous others. At the age of 14, Trujillo obtained his first sponsor, Anti-Hero, turning pro for them at age 16. Vans gave Trujillo his own signature shoe line and put Tony in two commercials shot by Stacy Peralta to advertise the shoe.
On December 7, 2002, Thrasher Magazine announced that Tony had been voted their thirteenth annual Skateboarder Of The Year.
On August 3, 2008, Trujillo won bronze in X Games 14 Superpark competition.
