The screenplay was written by Samson Raphaelson, based loosely on the play The Honest Finder (A Becsületes Megtaláló) by Hungarian playwright Aladár László. As with all the Lubitsch-Raphaelson collaborations, Lubitsch contributed ideas to the writing and Raphaelson contributed ideas to the directing.
