Until 1996, the school was known as Northeast Missouri State University. The name was changed to better reflect the change toward a statewide mission. For the past 12 years Truman has been ranked as the number one public university in the Midwest region Master's Category by U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges 2009." Truman State is the only public institution in the state with highly selective admissions standards.
