In 1999, it was named by Spin magazine as one of the most influential alternative rock albums of all time. It features a wide array of genres, including reggae, soul, funk, ska, folk, R&B;, blues, and heavy metal. The album begins with a hard rock version of Curtis Mayfield's Super Fly classic "Freddie's Dead". The title is derived from the ad agency in Robert Downey Sr.'s film Putney Swope.
