Up Periscope is a 1959 World War II drama starring James Garner as a Navy frogman fighting the Japanese. The supporting cast includes Edmond O'Brien, Andra Martin, and Alan Hale, Jr. The movie was written by Richard H. Landau and Robb White from White's novel, produced by Aubrey Schenk, and directed by Gordon Douglas. One difference between the movie and the book is when the sub is attacked by a Japanese aircraft; in the movie the XO is killed; in the book it is the ship's captain who dies; another differences is that in the novel a US admiral explains to Braden and Stevenson why the mission is so important; Braden is forced to kill a Japanese soldier who surprises him during his mission.
Lt. Kenneth Braden is unexpectedly ordered to report to duty, without being able to notify Sally Johnson, his love interest. It turns out that her involvement with him is partially official, as she is an officer of Naval Intelligence, and is responsible for him being selected for a dangerous mission.
