Uvalde was the home of John Nance "Cactus Jack" Garner, former Speaker of the House and Vice President of the United States. Actor Matthew McConaughey, actress Dale Evans, Activist Katherine Gabrielle and former Governor of Texas Dolph Briscoe, were born in Uvalde. Uvalde is also home to the Grammy Award winning Tejano/Norteño group Los Palominos. As of the census of 2000, there were 14,929 people, 4,796 households, and 3,716 families residing in the city.
